Sunshine Week is a national initiative to promote a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants include news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and others interested in the public’s right to know.

In 2015, Sunshine Week celebrated 10 years of success in promoting greater government transparency, in both actual practice and in general awareness of its importance.

Many members of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation Board of Directors have personally written about how important open government issues are to them.  Click here for thoughts from GFAF’s Board.

Thoughts from GFAF Treasurer Carolyn Carlson, about crime reporters and law enforcement public information officers.

Thoughts from GFAF Director Jim Zachary.

Is this proclamation something we could ever get passed in Georgia?  GFAF has done of lot of these projects in past years, but is it time to do them again?  And here is a calendar of Sunshine Week events around the county.  Next year, perhaps we should plan a Georgia Sunshine Week symposium.  And as qualifying for many political office-holders closed last week, perhaps we could modify some of these questions to discuss with our candidates.  Here are some examples from around the country about the importance of open government.  And finally, here are 2016 Sunshine Weeks news pieces from around the country, and in Georgia.

Help us participate in the annual nationwide celebration of access to public information and what it means!
